So you’ve booked your bridal hair and makeup artist for your wedding day - yay! Now you are wondering if a bridal trial is necessary and when you should have one? In this blog post I will answer some common questions around why having a trial is so important and when you should book your bridal hair and makeup trial.

WHAT WILL I GAIN FROM HAVING A BRIDAL TRIAL?

“I already know what hair and makeup style I want, so why have a trial?”

Bridal trials are extremely important and worth having even if you are set on a particular idea for your wedding day. The hair and makeup trial provides the opportunity to try out the look you have in mind and ensures that you feel comfortable with what you’ve chosen. Sometimes a look you have seen on Pinterest or Instagram just doesn’t translate well when created on your own hair. Perhaps that lip colour doesn’t quite work for your complexion, or maybe that smoky eye just feels too heavy in reality. We can discuss the look you want and make adjustments and tweaks so that it works for YOU.

A trial allows you to see how your skin and/or hair reacts with the products used and gives you a chance to provide feedback so that any necessary adjustments can be made for the wedding day. Using photographs and notes, the methods and products used are recorded so the look can be easily replicated on the wedding morning.

“Do I really need to meet my stylist before the wedding day?”

The trial will probably be the first opportunity for you to meet your bridal stylist and means you will have a familiar face there on the wedding day itself, not just someone you have only read about online. Having the chance to get to know each other means you will feel completely comfortable and relaxed on the big day! It also gives me a chance to get to know your hair and skin type and how best to achieve the look you’re aiming for.

WHEN SHOULD I HAVE MY BRIDAL TRIAL?

“OK, so when do I need to book my bridal trial?”

I recommend having your trial around 3-6 months prior to the day of your wedding. It is best not to leave it until the last minute as the sooner you have your trial, the sooner you can put your mind at ease that your vision for hair and makeup will work and you know you’ll look and feel great on your big day! Having the trial several months before the wedding date also allows you to book in for a haircut or colouring appointment and to order any hair accessories or hair extensions, if necessary.

“How much time should I set aside for the trial?”

A hair and makeup trial normally takes anywhere between 2 and 4 hours. For hair or makeup only, allow up to 2 hours. It is best to have your trial during daylight hours so that you have a clear view of what your makeup and hair will look like on the wedding day.

I hope this has helped to answer some questions around bridal trials. Ultimately, it is always better to be prepared and to know exactly what to expect on your wedding day!
